Album: Real Estate
I can't believe I forgot to write about this album. I mean, I meant to, but something about the nature of Real Estate's music encourages forgetfulness. Listening to it feels like hugging someone else with an over sized down coat--it's warming, comforting, and gentle. I can't say why it feels this way, exactly. It has something to do with the combination of vaguely muffled drums, meandering noodles of layered electric and acoustic guitar tracks, and hazy vocals. But it's more than that. The foundation of Real Estate is the beautiful melodies they create, as well as their dreamy take on repetition. They know when to let their instruments speak for themselves (Suburban Beverage, Let's Rock The Beach) and when utilize their vocal tracks (Snow Days). I suppose there's something decidedly 1970's about the album. Something folk-rockish but not really. They just know when to do what so well. They accomplish the paradoxical feat of creating a densely spacious sound, and as a result, each small detail stands out beautifully. It's just so fucking chill. Even though it doesn't sound like a winter record, it's guaranteed to warm you up. I definitely recommend checking it out.
In other news, sorry I've been slacking on the posts lately. I just finished up my degree, so I've been a little busy. I'm planning on making a top ten albums of the year list, but I probably won't finish it until late next week. In the meantime, you can check out Pitchfork's top fifty list for the year. I agree with many of the choices, but disagree with many of the placements. I'm also putting a link to Tiny Mixed Tapes' list of the top 50. They have an awesome take on music, and I've been spending more time reading their reviews.
