Brainfeeder

Another acquisition in a long list of newly acquired minimal electronic albums, I find Teebs' Ardour to be a sublime, distinctly West Coast interpretation of hazy beats. According to a short bio on XLR8RArdour is an accomplished painter, skater, and artist who lived for a time with Steve Ellison (aka Flying Lotus). Apparently the two got along, because Teebs released this debut on Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label. There are also some striking similarities, and essential differences, between what Teebs is doing and what Flying Lotus is doing. In a review I read over on The Quietus, critic Rory Gibb suggested that the Los Angelas Brainfeeder label collective is the American counterpart to much of the London dubstep scene. Both scenes are seeing some excellent releases (Flying Lotus and Burial, respectively), and both scenes are striving for originality within what many consider a narrow genre of music. I like this album for it's ease of delivery. It's lazy in the best way possible, but you can find something new with each listen. It makes me miss the west coast. And with an album name like Ardour (synonymous for "enthusiasm" or "passion"), it makes me miss the passion people have out west for the one thing I need more of: relaxation. If you like Flying Lotus (or any minimal electronic/beat oriented music), check out Ardour.
