Ostensibly, these two offerings hail from the divergent genres of Ducktails's meandering, psychedelic surf pop and Marc Ribot's bare-boned jazz. Yet the essence of the two albums is, for me, linked by a delightfully common thread of tranquility (each also features a guitarist from New Jersey). I first stumbled across Marc Ribot's (pronounced REE-bow) name on Metacritic's top album list, and the more I read about him, the more impressed I am by what he's done. A now 54 year-old studio musician, Ribot has worked with the likes of Tom Waits, John Zorn, David Sylvian, Jack McDuff, Wilson Pickett, The Lounge Lizards, Arto Lindsay, T-Bone Burnett, Medeski, Martin and Wood, Cibo Matto, Elysian Fields, Sam Phillips, Elvis Costello, David Poe, Allen Ginsberg, Foetus, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Susana Baca, The Black Keys, Stan Ridgway, Vinicio Capossela, Alain Bashung, Lyenn, Hector Zazou, McCoy Tyner, Elton John, Madeline Peyroux, Marianne Faithfull, Leonid Fedorov, and Tonio K. He has released 19 albums and worked on several films. Check out Terry Gross interviewing him on Fresh Air. These are two beautiful albums for snowy winter days or, if one can look forward to them, balmy summer nights. Enjoy.
