Clive Tanaka y Su Orquesta

Let me first say that I take no credit for finding this album. It all goes to my buddy, Reis, who consistently introduces me to new music, takes the time to send me extensive lists of music I'm missing in my collection, and always includes me on his year-end best of. He originally sent me a curious text message that had me rummaging through my memory banks for an answer: "Hey man, do you have a tape deck?" Now, any self-respecting music fan, aside from the mandatory record player, CD player, and digital music player, is sure to have a tape deck lying around somewhere (think, Tony, think!), but as I ran out of options--old boom box? Roommate's car? Parent's house in the attic?--I realized I had failed his test. I was worried Reis might stop thinking I was cool. Instead, he found a copy of this sweet album for me! Thanks, dude! Japan native Clive Tanaka y Su Orquesta has made an awesome, and I hesitate to use the word, chillwave album reminiscent of Air's brilliant Moon Safari, but with even more opportunities to get up and dance or sit down and relax. I haven't been able to stop listening to it since I heard the first track, and it's the first album this year (aside from Destroyer's album) that I bought without hesitation. Check it out, and enjoy some great electronic music!

I went home to visit my parents a while ago and they were doing a big clean out of the attic. They are currently trying to sell the house. They asked if I would take all my stuff with me, or at least sort through all of it and take what I want, leaving the rest to the fate of trash pick up. Well, amidst the old art work, journals, notebooks, posters, love letters, and other miscellaneous high school memories, I found my lod tape collection along with my old Aiwa portable tape player. It immediately brought back memories of riding the bus, trying to drown out the painful din of the "real" world with mix tapes, punk rock, and whatever other weirdness I could copy from friend's tapes.

I brought that thing home and hooked it up to the stereo system right away. I realized a couple things:

1. Most of my tapes suck. There are a few gems, but most suck.

2. The mix tapes are always the best, but only when created in the hands of a skilled artist. Mix tapes also have an uncanny ability to support time travel. Weird.

3. Audio quality from tapes is horrible. This is as big a revelation as realizing how wonderful vinyl is. I was disappointed and sad.

Right now the tapes are still in a box, and the tape player is sitting in another box with a bunch of other derelict electronic machinery. I just had to share after reading your post.

Outstanding! Besides using cool words like "uncanny" and "derelict," your story makes me want to go home SUPER bad so I can look through all the shit I have boxed up in my parent's attic. Thanks for making me feel better about not having a tape player--if the audio quality is really as bad as it seems it is, I have no need to fear the wrath of Reis! (And even more reason to keep buying vinyl!)

Hope all is well, my friend. You're missing one hell of a winter up here...

There is no wrath of me! Also, I don't think anyone needs a tape player anymore - just so happened that this dude put his album out on tape first. Regardless of the audio quality, it is just fun to have a tape again. And I found that, just like the pops and fuzz of a record, tape audio has its own charm.
