DeVotchKa
100 Lovers
[Anti; 2011]

GENRE: Does Nick Urata count as a genre?

Listen

It's a shame more people don't know about Denver, CO eclectics, DeVotchKa. Since 2000 DeVotchKa has released five full lengths, an EP, and scored the indie film, Little Miss Sunshine.  Although their most recent release, 100 Lovers, has not received the same critical acclaim of 2008's A Mad & Faithful Telling, I find it incredibly sublime and enjoyable for its spacious, string-laden atmosphere. They've shed some of their more straightforward eastern-folk roots and punk-tinged sensibilities for a more dramatic approach to, well, songs about love and loss. Nick Urata's voice is truly majestic, and works well with the sonic backdrop that runs throughout the record. Please check out Anne Vickman's review of the album on Boston Magazine's blog, and listen to the track below.
