New York newcomer Lana Del Rey's debut single is a subtly lush exercise in contrast. Flourishes of harp, sulking strings, march-step snare, breezy atmospherics, and Lizzy Grant's beautifully melancholic voice are unexpected accompaniments to lyrics like, "He holds me in his big arms / Drunk and I am seein' stars / This is all I think of . . . playing video games." But thematically the interplay between Grant's music and lyrics is a cohesive exercise in realism, depressing and beautiful. Listen below:
