Listen: The War On Drugs, "Baby Missiles"

Listening to Philadelphia indie-rockers The War On Drugs is a bit like mistaking a stranger for an old acquaintance, particularly if said stranger just happens to sound like a combination of Kurt Vile, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, and melodic Americana-shoegaze (incidentally, Vile and War On Drugs frontman Adam Granduciel were the band's two original members before Vile went solo, but Granduciel still plays in Vile's backup band, The Violators). The band's second full-length, "Slave Ambient," was released last week by Secretly Canadian, and with members Dave Hartley and Mike Zanghi, Granduciel has crafted a lovely album for those of us wanting to extend the lazy days of summer, or road trip with something comfortably American. Snare-driven, key-hooked track "Baby Missiles" sounds like it could have been written for Chevy driving patriots in the late 70s, but remains fresh thanks to WOD's modern take on production.
