Listen: Mara Carlyle's "The Devil & Me"

"The Devil & Me" is a single off Shropshire, England native Mara Carlyle's sophomore album, Floreat. The album was originally slated for release in early summer of 2008, but complications with a shifting EMI label shelved the album for a few years until it found light this month. Carlyle's voice is certainly the centerpiece of this track, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if she has some classical training on her resume. Her voice floats angelically above the constant chatter of delicately splashing cymbals, and her vocal work is beautifully suited for the track's ballad style folk-jazz. The tugging, repetitive piano riff (and what almost sounds like the subtle, occasional whistling of a theremin low in the mix), contributes to the confessional, nostalgic nature of this track: "Oh sweet thing / Oh sweet thing / Where have you been...You only had to call / And I'd have ran across the broken glass / Fought back flames / Or whatever it takes / Just to be near you / I was always here." Carlyle invites us to believe that, "We all need someone to give it away to," and while she ends the song by giving away the obvious (I love you / I love you / I love you), the unabashed honesty surrounding this love seems cathartic and, oddly, healing. I'm excited to hear the entire album, and I hope you enjoy this beautiful track.
