Dear Canada,

Why are your bands so fucking awesome? Hailing from Calgary, Women are on pace to earn acclaim beyond the esoteric circles of the online music world. If you had the chance to check out their first, self-titled album, you may be expecting more of the same, fuzzed out, art rock. In one sense, you'd be right. But with Women's sophomore album, Public Strain, the band finds itself exploring a soundscape with more space, more patience, and more investment in the melodic. Songs like the slow moving "Penal Colony" blend eerily into the ambient "Bells," only to remind you on "China Steps" that they are, after all, a guitar band. The album's closing three tracks, "Locust Valley," "Venice Lockjaw," and "Eyesore" showcase the brilliant, catchy guitar work that underpinnes the album, while earlier tracks like "Heat Distraction" sound like Bowie B-Sides from the 70's. This is a band that's only getting better.
