A Yucky Misnomer

Yuck

[Fat Possum; 2011]

GENRE: Yo La Tengo getting wasted and slightly sentimental with The Pains of Being Pure At Heart and Times New Viking

I was originally drawn to Yuck because I heard the lovely piano ballad, "Daughter," from their eponymous EP released last year. It turns out the track is something of an anomaly, as their self-titled full length debut is the stuff noise-pop wet dreams are made of. The only thing yucky about this album is its cover art; musically it's a pristinely packaged pop record reminiscent (nearly to a fault) of noisy bands like Yo La Tengo, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and Times New Viking. If the record came across as at all affected, it would be difficult to enjoy, but Yuck deliver a record of lean, well-constructed goodies. Check out the three tracks embedded below, the last of which is the ballad from their EP. Enjoy.
