Listen: John Talabot, "Destiny (feat. Pional)" & "When The Past Was Present"

John Talabot's debut album has been described  as the perfect warmer for the waning winter days-- sunny "indie-house" or "Balearic house." But Talabot's record label, Hivern Discs (Catalan for "winter"), as well as Talabot's own remarks, suggest that his music is darker than people are suggesting. In the interview below from the Red Bull Music Academy, Talabot expresses his confusion: "Sometimes I'm not really focused on that sound, but I'm tagged as house. Why am I always tagged as house or tropical or happy music when I'm making some dark tracks? I don't understand." It's difficult for me to weigh in, as House is a genre presumably best experienced and understood by one submersed in the club scene. Neverthless, it's difficult not to agree with the man making the music, and there are surely some darker moments on Talabot's beautiful debut, fin. Check out tracks "Destiny" and "When The Past Was Present" below, and learn more about Talabot in his interview. Enjoy.
