I know Brooklyn resident Frankie Rose from her time with Crystal Stilts, Vivian Girls, and Dum Dum Girls, but on Rose's first solo album (after Frankie Rose & The Outs), she's using what she learned from the lo-fi, fuzz-drenched girl-pop of her previous bands as a springboard to something cleaner, crisper, and, well, more interstellar. The residue of her previous residencies remains in the best ways--vocal work, heavy bass hooks, simple guitar lines, and songwriting--but with the help of producer Le Chev (Passion Pit, Lemonade), Rose explores her own version of glo-fi that adds otherworldly synths and darker textures. Her album is reminiscent of The Cure's masterpiece, Disintegration (listen to the opening guitar riff in Gospel/Grace, with its pounding toms, and you'll hear a slowed-down version of "Last Dance"). Check out the three tracks below, and be sure to head over to Slumberland Records to pick up a copy of the album. Enjoy.
